We exploit this to engineer devices where optical pulses control electronic resistance states, opening paths towards neuromorphic computing and optical memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optical control of multiple resistance levels in graphene for memristive applications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41699-024-00503-7\">npj 2D Materials and Applications (2024)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Memristors \u2014 devices whose resistance depends on their history \u2014 are a key building block of neuromorphic computing architectures that mimic the synaptic plasticity of biological neural networks. We demonstrate a non-volatile, all-optical memristor based on hBN-encapsulated graphene. Pulsed laser illumination controllably switches the device between multiple distinct, stable resistance states, with each pulse incrementally changing the resistance in a direction determined by the pulse parameters. The switching mechanism is non-destructive, reversible, and operable at room temperature, making this platform directly relevant to optical memory and neuromorphic applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H. K.
