CCMT has had a strong tradition of focused research in areas that have now evolved into the umbrella of “quantum matter”. Traditionally, they have been addressing problems in high temperature superconductivity, heavy fermion systems, manganites, physics of spin systems, approaches to strong correlations such as the dynamical mean field theory, self-consistent cluster theories, fractional Hall effect/anyons etc. As noted by Phil Anderson, in his famous paper on high-temperature superconductivity, some of the key ideas leading to the resonating valence bond theory were crystallized during his visit to this vibrant group in Bangalore. In addition to the traditional areas of quantum matter, the group has espoused several new research directions motivated by the recent developments and advances including areas of topological quantum matter and cold-atom physics. The group’s research is driven by the motivation to understand and explore new phenomena and systems by exploiting the notions of correlations, topology and entanglement.
