Research Interests
Yuval Gefen holds the Isabelle and Samuel Friedman Professorial Chair of Theoretical Physics at the Weizmann Institute. He has graduated from Tel Aviv University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics, Santa Barbara, and at the University of Washington, Seattle (working with David Thouless), before joining the Weizmann Institute. Professor Gefen has worked as a Senior Fellow, a Distinguished Professor or a visiting professor in numerous universities, including the University of Cambridge, Oxford and Birmingham (UK), University of Leipzig, University of Karlsruhe, University of Koeln and the Free University of Berlin (Germany), Yale University and Princeton University and the Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota (USA). He has received numerous awards, including EPSRC and Leverhulme Professorships, Alexander von Humboldt Award, the Max Planck Award, the Helmholtz Award, the Mercator Professorship, International Professorship at the University of Koeln, and the Leibnitz Professorship. He has been a consultant with various companies and institutions, including IBM (USA), Exxon (USA) , NEC (USA), Argonne National Lab (USA). He has been a board member and chair of and consultant to a number of universities. Yuval Gefen’s two-headed research focuses on (1) Quantum condensed matter systems, primarily Quantum Hall and Topological Insulators physics, and (2) Quantum measurement, including quantum state engineering and quantum steering.
